The militaries of the five Central Asian countries– Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan – inherited a large inventory of platforms and systems after gaining independence from the Soviet Union. Three and a half decades later, the five militaries are modernising their equipment and these countries are turning to extra-regional suppliers.
For example, Kazakhstan has received its first Airbus A400M transport aircraft in December 2024, while in February 2026 Embraer announced the sale of two C-390 Millennium transport aircraft to the Uzbekistani Air Force. Domestic industries are also developing ground vehicles such as armoured personnel carriers (APCs), and modernising legacy systems. Moreover, drone fever has arrived in the region.

BAE Systems announced on 16 July the sale of two “state-of-the-art” Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems for Brazil. The guns will be installed aboard patrol vessels being built for the Brazilian Navy’s Patrol Vessel Construction Project (Programa de Obtenção de Navios-Patrulha: PRONAPA).
In its press release, the company explained that the guns are effective against a variety of targets, including drones, missiles, helicopters, swarming boats, surface vessels, and land targets. According to the company, the gun can switch “seamlessly” among ammunition types to deliver “versatile” targeting of air-, land- and sea-based threats. BAE also noted that Brazil already operates “dozens of Bofors 40 mm guns.”

But what happens to decommissioned platforms that global naval powerhouses no longer operate? Some are kept in reserve or sent to scrapyards. However, many decommissioned vessels find a second life when sold or donated to partners and allies.

At the Sea Air Space expo at the National Harbor, outside of Washington, DC, FW MAG spoke with Seamus Flatley, Chief Growth Officer at the Florida-based MARTAC Systems. The company discussed with FW Mag its upcoming deliveries and projects to expand its family of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) for new missions.
The company delivered one DEVIL RAY T-38 and four T-12 USVs to the Philippine Navy in July of 2024. Two additional T-38s will be delivered in May of this year, MARTAC confirmed exclusively to FW MAG. Flatley added that his company has “ongoing discussions about future opportunities with the Armed Forces of the Philippines.” The T-38s are equipped with the launch-and-recovery system manufactured by the Israeli company Sealartec.

The Australian company DroneShield, producer of counter-uncrewed aerial systems (counter-UAS) technology, announced on 30 June a contract package worth US$9.7 million for an undisclosed Latin American customer.
Specifically, the company announced three contracts “for its handheld and on-the-move counter-drone systems.” DroneShield will deliver the systems via its privately owned in-country reseller, which is contractually required to distribute the systems to “a defense end customer in a Latin American country,” the company explained in a press release. Zona Militar contacted DroneShield to learn about this contract and other projects the company has with Latin America; company representatives declined to elaborate further on the new contract or other agreements, citing confidentiality clauses.

La empresa australiana DroneShield, especializada en tecnología contra sistemas aéreos no tripulados (counter-UAS), anunció el 30 de junio un paquete de contratos por un valor de 9,7 millones de dólares estadounidenses para un cliente latinoamericano cuya identidad no fue revelada.
En concreto, la empresa comunicó la firma de tres contratos “para sus sistemas antidrones portátiles y móviles”. DroneShield entregará los sistemas a través de un distribuidor local de propiedad privada, el cual tiene la obligación contractual de distribuir los equipos a “un cliente final del sector defensa en un país latinoamericano”, explicó la compañía en un comunicado de prensa. Zona Militar contactó a DroneShield para conocer más sobre este contrato y otros proyectos en América Latina; sin embargo, representantes de la empresa declinaron ofrecer más detalles sobre el nuevo acuerdo u otros convenios, citando cláusulas de confidencialidad.
