Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan carried out a short African tour from 20-23 February. This visit, the second to the region in four months, took the Turkish leader to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Senegal. By now, President Erdogan has visited over 30 African states, not counting repeat visits.

The Recent Tour

Ankara has stepped up its initiatives regarding Africa in recent months. In October 2021, President Erdogan carried out a four-day tour to three African countries: Angola, Nigeria and Togo. Two months later, in December, Istanbul hosted the Third Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit, which was attended by 16 African heads of state. Now, the Turkish president has returned to Africa once again.

Some unfamiliar names were included in a list of countries Brazil will target for defence equipment exports.

Brazil has ambitious plans for its national defence industry. Defence exports reached around $1.5 billion in 2021, with goals to reach between $4.5 billion and $6 billion in the future.

Against this backdrop, the Brazilian government and defence industries have identified a number of countries as potential customers for their defence technology.

The Argentine Navy has deployed its two newest offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), ARA Bouchard (P-51) and ARA Piedrabuena (P-52), to monitor an international fishing fleet traveling close to the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) en route to the South Atlantic. While there have been no confirmed reports of these vessels engaging in illegal, unregulated, or unreported (IUU) fishing, recent history suggests that this is occurring or will occur soon.
