W. Alejandro “Alex” Sanchez Nieto is an international security analyst who focuses on geopolitics, military and cyber security issues in the Western Hemisphere. His research interests include inter-state tensions, narco-insurgent movements and drug cartels, arms sales, the development of Latin American military industries, UN peacekeeping operations, as well as the rising use of drones (UAVs) for civilian and security uses in Latin America.

He regularly appears in different media outlets like the Toronto Star, New Internationalist, Russia Today, Al Jazeera, FusionBBC, Le Figaro, El Comercio (Peru), Opera Mundi (Brazil) and the Washington Diplomat, among others.

He is a regular contributor for IHS Jane's Defense Weekly, Blouin News and Living in Peru as well as the now-closed VOXXI. His analyses have appeared in numerous refereed journals including Small Wars and Insurgencies, Defence Studies, the Journal of Slavic Military Studies, European Security, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism and Perspectivas.

Mr. Sanchez is a member of the Forum on the Arms Trade, a cooperative project of arms trade experts. He has done extensive research on arms sales in Latin America, specially the region's weapons industry. One of his major interests is the proliferation and manufacturing of drones/UAVs for security and civilian purposes, in the region.

He is a member of the Center for International Maritime Security (CIMSEC). He publishes a column entitled "The Southern Tide" that discusses maritime security issues relating to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Mr. Sanchez is also a country expert for Peru at the Providing for Peacekeeping Project (PPP), which aims to generate and disseminate current information and analysis to support the efforts of United Nations peacekeeping operations. To this end, Mr. Sanchez drafted a comprehensive profile of Peru's role in UN peace missions.

Mr. Sanchez is an Investigador Invitado (Guest Analyst) at the Centro Argentino de Estudios Internacionales (CAEI), a think tank located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. CAEI, he contributes to the Observatorio de Rusia (Russian Observatory) as well as Working Papers.

He has published two book chapters including a co-authored chapter with entitled “The Architectonics of Bolivia’s Foreign Policy,” for Latin American Foreign Policies Between Ideology and Pragmatism, edited by Gian Luca Gardini and Peter Lambert (Palgrave Macmillan, February 2011).

Mr. Sanchez’ presentations include a discussion about Russia’s influence in the Caribbean, which he presented at an “off the record” workshop organized by the Institute of National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University in Washington D.C. He also discussed Peru’s strategic culture during a workshop organized by Florida International University’s Applied Research Center. Additionally, he has  given presentations to CIMSEC's Forum of Authors and Readers (2016 gathering). the Colombian National Police, the U.S. intelligence community as well as to classes from William Patterson University, American University, Miami University (Ohio) and the Washington Center.

Mr. Sanchez holds a Master’s degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from the School of International Service at American University and has attended the Institute of World Politics, Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and has carried out studies in Austria, Belgium and France. He has also attended the National Defense University's Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies in Washington DC.
