General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) and AeroVironment have co-developed the Precision Effects & Reconnaissance, Canister-Housed (PERCH) system. To summarize, PERCH is a launcher for AeroVironment’s Switchblade 300 and Switchblade 600 loitering munitions designed for the M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 main battle tanks and Stryker infantry carrier vehicles. In Latin America, Argentina’s Army operates the Stryker, so Zona Militar spoke with Mark Hu, Manager, U.S. Business Development at GDLS, about why Buenos Aires should be interested in PERCH.

There are flashpoints to watch as Argentina navigates its future between the polar attractions of Washington and Beijing, including future defense deals and a deep space facility.

WASHINGTON — The surprise decision by Argentina to seek a rare partner status with NATO, coupled with Buenos Aires’s recent choice of Dutch F-16s for its next fighter fleet over Chinese rivals, appears to have handed the West some clear victories in a tug of war with Beijing over influence in the South American nation. But analysts told Breaking Defense the game is long, and China has many cards — especially economic and commercial ones — still in hand.

Starved of funding, the Venezuelan Army is repairing and refurbishing obsolete Western-supplied vehicle fleets to maintain a meaningful capability.

The Venezuelan Army participated in high-profile parades on 24 June and 5 July to demonstrate not only the strength of the armed forces, but also their apparent ingenuity. After spending billions of dollars during the Hugo Chávez years on Russian defence technology, international sanctions and an ongoing economic crisis mean that Caracas can no longer afford state-of-the-art military equipment to sustain its armed forces. As a consequence, the army is repairing and refurbishing old vehicles and equipment, obtained in the pre-Chávez years, to expand its arsenal and maintain deterrence capabilities.

The equipment that participated in the parades included AMX-13 and ...

Three options remain on the table as Argentina looks to procure wheeled 6x6 armoured personnel carriers.

The Brazilian 6x6 VBTP-MR Guaraní armoured personnel carrier (APC) is being tested by the Argentinian Army, which is seeking a new capability alongside its decades-old fleet of tracked M113s.

Speaking on 4 June during a ceremony marking the arrival of new vehicles for the army, Argentinian defence minister Agustín Rossi ...
